Job Description:

PURPOSE OF POSITION: It is the responsibility of the Registration Specialist to competently assist patients prior to and during their appointment by obtaining and updating the patient's personal and insurance information into our systems. By serving patients in a professional, cheerful and helpful manner this position acts as a liaison between the patient, provider and other staff members to ensure that patients receive the care they need.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires sitting for prolonged periods of time and some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary for the operation of basic office equipment such as computer terminal and telephone. May require lifting up to 25 pounds. Requires hearing in normal acuity range and eyesight correctable to 20/20. Must have adequate manual dexterity to write legibly and perform required procedures. Requires the ability to work quickly under stress.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in reception area; involving contact with patients. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Contact involving dealing with sick people.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (This may not include all of the duties assigned).

+ Work with physicians in resolving front office function issues and answering questions.

+ Process Worker's Compensation claims.

+ Assist in coordination of the referral or prior authorization process at the clinic.

+ Interview new patients, establish accounts, and verify/change patient demographics/insurance coverage in computer.

+ Greet patients and visitors in a prompt, courteous and helpful manner.

+ Check in patients, verify and update necessary information in the medical record.

+ Receive payments from patients and issue receipts. Reconcile cash received daily.

+ Answer phones as needed.

+ Attend front office meetings.

+ Maintain strictest confidentiality.

+ Ongoing customer service training.

+ Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience and Skills:

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: Skill in operating a computer, calculator and photocopy machine. Knowledge of coding policies and procedures and insurance reimbursement practices. Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Ability to clearly communicate with patients, physicians and staff.

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of a course in medical records technology preferred.

EXPERIENCE: One to two years of experience with patient registration and medical office experience preferred. Background in managed care desirable.
